Independent living on the move

2014-09-11

Thursday 11 September 2014

A free mobile service offering the latest information about independent living is available to people living in rural and remote South Australia.

Disabilities Minister Tony Piccolo said the recently updated mobile unit is a custom-built wheelchair accessible caravan, staffed with people that can help carers, people living with disability and the ageing to see and interact with the range of equipment and technology available to them.

"The service is operated by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion's Independent Living Centre and aims to help people make informed decisions about the full range of equipment, techniques and technology on the market today," Mr Piccolo said.

"The mobile unit has occupational therapists and a registered nurse available to answer questions and talk with people about their needs.

"Visitors to the caravan can view and trial a large range of equipment, discuss their individual situation and leave with a variety of written information.

"No appointment is necessary, and the service is available to all members of the public.

"The mobile outreach service is another example of the State Government's commitment to providing greater choice and control for South Australians who are ageing or live with disability."

Ageing Minister Zoe Bettison said the State Government wants older South Australians to enjoy lasting wellbeing and opportunity.

"As we live longer, it is important that we enjoy this extra time and remain active in the community, in the economy and in society as whole," Ms Bettison said.

"A meaningful life features the best possible health and active social and economic engagement in the community. Active ageing is healthy ageing."
