New app to help low-income families manage their budgets

2014-10-15

A new free smart phone app – Affordable SA - will help low-income households manage cost
of living expenses by providing information on programs and services available to them.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison says the app, developed in conjunction with
the Salvation Army for Anti-Poverty Week 2014, also provides practical tips and tools to help
support people to manage their living costs.

"This includes useful information on housing, concessions, utilities, transport, health, education,
food and justice, all accessible in the palm of their hand," Ms Bettison said.

"For example, the education section provides details on school cards, child care rebates, payment
options for fees and a range of other government services.

"While South Australia is consistently recognised as being a more affordable place to live compared
with other states, many families still do it tough.

"Even with careful budgeting many households can face difficulties making ends meet and this new
app is designed to help those families access the help they need."

Some of the app's features enable users to:

  • connect with services and support
  • explore information with the 'I need help with' tool
  • stay connected with events through the calendar
  • stay up to date with news and announcements
  • share content via email or social media

Ms Bettison said State Government also funds a number of programs that also assist individuals and
their families experiencing financial difficulty.

"These include the Utilities Literacy Program, Community Foodbank and Financial Counselling
Services," she said.

"And just this week we launched the Consumer Credit Law Centre of SA which helps people to pursue
their legal rights in regard to debt and financial hardship, disputes with creditors, bankruptcy
and mortgage stress."

The Affordable SA app can be downloaded from the App Store.
