Celebrating International Day of People with Disability

2015-12-03

Today is the 23rd annual celebration of International Day of People with Disability.

Disabilities Minister Tony Piccolo said the theme for 2015 is Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities.

"This important day aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements," Mr Piccolo said.

"This is the third IDPwD celebration since the National Disability Insurance Scheme trial commenced in South Australia. The NDIS is a generational reform changing the way disability services are funded and delivered across Australia.

"South Australia is committed to ensuring that people with disability are able to live in accessible and well-designed communities with opportunities to reach their potential and participate in our social, economic, sporting and cultural life.

"Today is about recognising the contribution that people living with disability, and their family and carers, make to the community.

"A number of events will be held in Adelaide to mark the day and show support for people with disability.

"I encourage all South Australians to get involved today by attending one of the IDPwD events held across the state."

The following events are being held to celebrate IDPwD:

  • The Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) will have a presence in Rundle Mall between 11am and 3pm, providing a range of information about the department and its services, with a focus on disability services and programs.
  • More than 20 organisations will attend an event in Victoria Square, Adelaide, between 11.30am and 2.30pm, to offer information about disability services in South Australia.
