More support for problem gamblers from culturally diverse communities

2015-10-01

Problem gamblers from culturally diverse communities will have more support and greater access to services under a new action plan launched today.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said the plan enables multicultural and mainstream services to work in partnership with communities to respond to problem gambling.

"The plan promotes the sharing of knowledge and expertise to address problem gambling in culturally diverse communities," she said.

"It is a result of collaboration by a diverse range of community groups and gambling help services, along with health and welfare agencies.

"It will enable organisations to support people with a gambling problem, as well as assist their friends and family.

"Initiatives like this, when combined with knowledge, experience, skills and passion, make a real difference to those in the community."

The action plan recognises that cultural diversity must be included when decisions are made on providing gambling services.

Ms Bettison said problems with gambling are often accompanied by difficulties in other areas such as relationships, finance, mental health, alcohol, drugs, violence and crime.

"I am confident the plan will provide a solid foundation for increased recognition of the unique needs of migrants and refugees in the community," she said.

Funding will also be provided for a Community Ambassador's Program so multicultural community members can be trained to provide holistic responses to program gambling.

Education strategies and information resources, including a multi-lingual problem gambling website for multicultural and mainstream community services, will be provided as part of the program.
