One-off payments for Sampson Flat community groups

2015-08-28

Time is running out for community organisations helping bushfire affected communities to apply for a one-off monetary gift from the State Emergency Relief Fund.

South Australians generously donated almost $2 million to the Sampson Flat bushfire appeal and $50,000 has been set aside to help organisations supporting the recovery effort.

Acting Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Leon Bignell said not-for-profit community groups need to apply for the one-off payment by Monday, 31 August.

"Successful applicants will receive up to $5000 to help them continue working with the community to provide much needed support for medium to long term recovery," Mr Bignell said.

"Restoring communities' emotional and social wellbeing is an important part of the recovery process and many dedicated organisations have been on the front line delivering these vital services.

"They continue to play an important role in restoring the wellbeing of fire affected communities."

The monetary gifts will support community projects that seek to:

  • improve community strength and resilience
  • strengthen community connectedness, sense of place and community identity
  • build community capacity for future disasters
  • improve mental health and wellbeing of communities and individuals
  • strengthen the capacity of communities and individuals to help themselves.

Payments will be distributed by the State Emergency Relief Fund Committee through its Community Strength and Resilience Initiative (CSRI).

"The CSRI has a specific focus on providing assistance towards projects that build strength and resilience in communities affected by the Sampson Flat bushfire," he said.

"South Australians have been very generous with their donations to the State Emergency Relief Fund and I hope community organisations take this opportunity to apply."
