Relief for struggling families as Elizabeth Foodbank officially opens

2015-10-21

A new Foodbank SA outlet is opening in Elizabeth today, providing struggling families and individuals in Adelaide's north with essential food items.

The fourth outlet to be opened in South Australia, the Elizabeth store is a partnership between Foodbank SA, Anglicare SA and the State Government.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison says Foodbank SA provides a friendly environment where people on low incomes can obtain essential food items, including free fruit and vegetables, through a food voucher system.

"Each Foodbank SA outlet is run in partnership with a community services organisation that assesses a client's situation and issues vouchers so that they can shop for their own groceries," she said.

"This is the fourth outlet to be established in South Australia since the first one in Bowden opened in 2013, followed by Edwardstown and Port Pirie."

Foodbank SA is the largest food relief agency in South Australia. It provides food to more than 450 community organisations and 270 schools. In 2015, it expects to distribute up to 2.5 million kilograms of food to South Australians in need.

The State Government is providing $250,000 each year to 2018 to establish and support operations at the four South Australian sites. This year, Foodbank SA received additional $80,000 through the State Government's
Community Benefit SA program to purchase a new refrigerated food van.

"The Elizabeth store delivers on a 2015 election commitment to fund Foodbank SA to open more low-cost food outlets in South Australia," Ms Bettison said.

"It also follows the recent launch of Good Shepherd Microfinance's Good Money Store in Salisbury, which offers no- and low-interest loans for South Australians on low incomes.

"These partnerships are part of our larger commitment to supporting people during times of financial hardship, and to help make South Australia an affordable place to live."

The Elizabeth Community Foodbank outlet is located at the Anglicare Mission at 91-93 Elizabeth Way, Elizabeth. To learn more about Foodbank SA please visit www.foodbanksa.org.au/home
