SA Pinery Fire Appeal

2015-12-01

The State Emergency Relief Fund (SERF) Committee has welcomed a $1 million donation from the State Government today, and encouraged South Australians to continue to show their support by donating to the SA Pinery Fire Appeal.

SERF Committee Chair and Fund Administrator, Joe Ullianich, said that donations for those affected by the Pinery Fire had got off to a strong start.

"From the moment the SA Pinery Fire Appeal commenced, the people of South Australia have generously opened their hearts and their wallets," he said.

"The donation by the South Australian Government, announced today by the Premier, shows the level of commitment the government has to supporting the people affected by this terrible fire.

"The State Government donation has taken the balance of the fund to more than $1.2 million.

"I would also like to thank Cricket Australia, who arranged for a collection at Adelaide Oval on Sunday during the Test Match between Australia and New Zealand. With the help of the State Emergency Service, Rotary in Australia and Australian Red Cross, more than $7,000 was donated.

"People have been incredibly generous, and I hope to see many more community fundraising activities to show support for those affected by the fire."

All of the proceeds raised will go to people affected by the SA Pinery Fire, with priority given to those most in need. The appeal is being overseen by the SERF Committee, which is independent to government. The funds will be distributed under the direction of this committee.

Mr Ullianich said that the SERF Committee would assess the impacts of the fire over coming weeks, which will guide how the funds are distributed.

"The money will be distributed as a gift from the people of South Australia and not a replacement or supplement to insurance arrangements or other forms of compensation people may be entitled to receive," he said.

Mr Ullianich acknowledged the past efforts and generosity of corporate donors, and encouraged them to respond as they did after the Sampson Flat bushfire.
