South Australia commits $17.7m to National Partnership on Homelessness

2015-03-23

The State Government today matched the Commonwealth's commitment to the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness, allocating $17.7 million over two years for homelessness services.

Social Housing Minister Zoe Bettison said today's State and Federal government announcements end the uncertainty for South Australia's homelessness sector.

"There has been a great deal of uncertainty around future funding for services that help the most vulnerable South Australians," Ms Bettison said.

"Over the past six months, the State Government has worked closely with the sector to lobby the Federal Government to continue to fund the NPAH.

"Today, all that work paid off and I congratulate all of the local service providers for their hard work and determination to get a just result for the most marginalised people in our state."

Earlier today, Commonwealth Social Services Minister Scott Morrison announced a $230 million national funding package, over the next two years, including $8.87 million per annum for South Australia.

"I applaud Mr Morrison for ending the uncertainty around homelessness funding," Ms Bettison said.

"This means service providers can now focus on helping to end the cycle of homelessness instead of worrying about whether they can continue to employ their dedicated staff."

Ms Bettison also welcomed the Federal Government's renewed focus on domestic violence services and youth homelessness.

"This very much aligns with the State Government's priorities and I look forward to working with the Commonwealth to incorporate these priorities into the new agreement," she said.

"We have a good story to tell in South Australia about how we have reduced homelessness.

"This includes Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates showing a 41% drop in the number of people sleeping rough in South Australia, compared to a 6% decrease across Australia over the same period.

"This could not have been done without the support of the Federal Government."
