Time is running out for youth volunteer scholarship applications

2015-07-20

Volunteers Minister Zoe Bettison is reminding young South Australian volunteers to apply for financial support for further education through the 2015 Youth Volunteer Scholarship Awards Program.

Ms Bettison said the program provides up to $3000 to young South Australians, aged 25 and under, who volunteer their time and talents to help others in the community.

"With just a week to go until the 2015 application period closes, I urge our young volunteers to complete and submit their applications," Ms Bettison said.

"Successful recipients can put the scholarship funding towards the cost of studying at a South Australian university, TAFE SA or a vocational college, or they can contribute it towards the cost of text books.

"The State Government is committed to attracting, recruiting and retaining more young people into volunteering, because they are South Australia's future volunteers.

"It is timely to shine a spotlight on our young volunteers, ensuring these motivated young people are supported in their efforts to develop valuable skills and experiences when assisting the community.

"The practical skills learned while volunteering so often complement young people's education and career pathways."

Successful recipients of past scholarships have dedicated themselves to organisations including the Country Fire Service, Australian Air Force Cadets, the Australian Refugee Association and End Homelessness SA, as well as a range of sporting and community organisations.

"These organisations help to create a sense of community that benefits people in all walks of life in South Australia," she said.

"Ensuring that our young volunteers continue to support these and many other worthy organisations is critical to that continuing sense of community and wellbeing."

Applications for the Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award program close at 5pm on Friday, 24 July 2015.

Further information, scholarship guidelines and the online application form are available from the Office for Volunteers website at http://www.ofv.sa.gov.au/programs/youth-volunteer-scholarship-awards or by calling 1300 014 712.
