2016 Adelaide Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo

2016-09-23

The wellbeing of people with disability and older South Australians is the focus of an expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds today.

More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the 2016 Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo, which is on in the Goyder Pavilion from 10am-5pm.

More than 150 exhibitors will provide the latest information about products and services available to South Australians of all ages living with a disability.

Expo attendees can meet with a range of service providers and find out more about what they have to offer, including supports, education, employment, equipment and mobility aids.

There will also be information sessions, a digital literacy centre, performances, activities and a games area.

This year’s expo comes as South Australia transitions to the National Diisability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Following full roll-out, the NDIS will give more than 32,000 eligible South Australians more choice and control of the services they receive.

From 1 January 2017, eligible people aged 15-17 years will begin to enter the NDIS.

Entry to the expo is by gold coin donation. For more information visit

Background

The 2016 Expo is organised by the Catalyst Foundation (formerly known as the Senior’s Information Service) and is one of the largest events in the disability calendar.

This expo gives people an opportunity to find out more about services and supports and talk directly with the organisations providing these services.

The Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) will be there as an event sponsor and exhibitor. DCSI provides a range of services to improve the lives of older South Australians, people living with disability and carers. DCSI staff will be at the expo ready to speak with attendees about supports available.

Minister for Disabilities, Leesa Vlahos said: The Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo is a great way for people to access the latest information about services and products available to them, in a friendly and informal way.

The expo brings together more than 150 organisations whose services make a big difference to the day-to-day lives of thousands South Australians.

Getting accurate and clear information, and having a chance to talk over any issues, is very important for people, especially as we continue to transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and aged care reforms.

The NDIS will give more than 32,000 eligible South Australians opportunities, choice and control about the services they receive. It will also lead to the creation of around 6,000 new jobs in South Australia.

Representatives from the National Disability Insurance Agency will also be on hand to provide information and answer any questions that people may have.

Today’s expo is also an opportunity for people to share their stories, learn from the experiences of others, and discover new possibilities.
