27,000 SA tenants to receive new cash concession payment from tomorrow

2016-02-23

From tomorrow, more than 27,000 tenanted households across South Australia will receive the Cost of Living Concession for the first time.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said the concession is being provided a month earlier than originally estimated.

"This concession will help ease cost of living pressures faced by tenants who are on low or fixed incomes, as well as pensioners," she said.

"Many in our community are struggling to pay their bills, and this is why this concession is being provided to those who need it most."

The Cost of Living Concession was introduced in July last year - replacing the former council rates concession cut by the Federal Government - and was extended to tenants for the first time.

"Eligible homeowners who previously received the council rates concession were provided with a Cost of Living Concession payment of up to $200 from the State Government in September 2015," Ms Bettison said.

"However, we also know that tenants face a range of cost of living pressures and so we extended the concession to vulnerable and disadvantaged tenants, who can apply to receive up to $100 annually.

"Unlike the former council rates concession which applied only to homeowners, the Cost of Living Concession also provides support to vulnerable tenants.

"The concession provides flexibility for people to use it wherever it is needed in order to support themselves and their families."

Since payments for the 2015-16 financial year began last September, almost 150,000 homeowner households and retirement village residents have received the concession.

Applications will open for the 2016-17 Cost of Living Concession from 1 July 2016.

All South Australian pensioners and those on low or fixed incomes may be eligible for a range of concessions provided by the State Government, including on energy, water, sewerage, the Emergency Services Levy and transport.

To see if you are eligible for a concession, call the SA Concessions Hotline on 1800 307 758 or use the online Concessions Finder tool at www.sa.gov.au/concessions.
