Glendi Greek Festival kicks off today

2016-11-26

The Glendi Greek Festival kicks off at 12pm today, starting a weekend of family fun celebrating Greek food, entertainment, art, music, dance and culture.

The festival will run over two days, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November, at Bonython Park in Adelaide.

The festival is an event for anyone with a passion for one of the great ancient cultures of the world. One of the highlights of this year’s event will be the 10 tonne sand sculpture of the famous Greek physician, Hippocrates.

The festival is an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful contribution of South Australians with Greek ancestry, and to share Greek culture with the wider community.

Background

The State Government, through the Multicultural SA Major Festivals funding, has committed $180,000 over three years to the Glendi Greek Festival.

In 2011, a total of 37,677 South Australians reported having Greek ancestry.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Zoe Bettison said:

All South Australians should make the most of this opportunity to celebrate Greek culture by attending the Glendi Greek Festival in the Adelaide parklands this weekend.

The festival is an opportunity for all of us to join together and celebrate the great diversity of our South Australian community.

I would especially like to recognise the more than 300 volunteers who so selflessly and passionately work behind the scenes to make the Glendi Greek Festival such a vibrant success.
