Housing SA App wins State Award

2016-08-01

Housing SA's Business Systems section recently won a prestigious State award from the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) for an App it uses for vacancy maintenance inspections.

The AIIA is the peak industry body for the digital economy in Australia. The Vacancy Maintenance Inspection Application (VMIA) won the South Australian 2016 iAward for the Mobility Innovation of the Year - a cross technology category with 10 entrants. This is a terrific outcome given the high standard of competition from private and public entrants.

The App was also a Merit Recipient in the Public Sector and Government category out of 15 entrants. Housing SA's App is now automatically entered into the national iAwards competition later this month in Melbourne.

The App is used to get people approved for social housing and into suitable accommodation faster.  Scoping of maintenance works to prepare the properties for re-allocation can now be completed in the field.

Housing SA manages over 40,000 properties and Housing SA's maintenance team processes more than 5000 vacant properties a year.  Previous processes required paper-based manual entry in the field, resulting in a duplication of work and a range of other resource intensive tasks.

The VMIA application is being used across Housing SA. Its architecture enables work to be conducted offline, and then synchronised. The application has brought positive change to the work force enabling a shift from pencil and paper, to a real-time technical solution.

This means that a housing inspection done in a country region can be updated from the field instantly if a network is available. In some remote locations, this improvement alone can save up to three days of a vacancy period.
