More support for fire affected communities

2016-03-09

More than 60 families and individuals affected by the Pinery fire will share in $118,500 in the latest round of funds from the SA Pinery Fire Appeal.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said the money will be distributed this week.

"Recipients of this latest round of payments will include applicants whose homes and properties were damaged or destroyed in the fire," she said.

"More than $2.1 million has been donated to the appeal since it was established in November 2015.

"This includes more than 3500 donations from generous individuals and businesses across the state, as well as a $1 million contribution from the State Government.

Chair of the State Emergency Relief Fund Committee, Joe Ullianich, said the committee has received more than 400 applications, with more being received each day.

"We encourage anyone who suffered injury, loss or damage as a result of the fire to submit an application, if they have not already done so," he said.

"The committee will continue to accept applications until 30 June 2016.

"Including this week's round of payments, more than $430,000 of the donated money has been distributed. A further $155,000 has been approved by the Committee for distribution by late March 2016."

"The SERF Committee will continue to meet regularly to ensure donations are distributed in a fair and equitable manner as soon as possible, taking into consideration those who are still to apply."

Mr Ullianich the committee is taking a cautious and rigorous approach to the process to ensure sufficient funds will be available to meet all eligible applications.

"After the Sampson Flat fire, many applications were submitted months after the fire."

Donations to the SA Pinery Fire Appeal will continue to be accepted until the end of June 2016. Information on how to donate is available at www.sa.gov.au/recovery.

Application forms are available online at www.sa.gov.au/recovery, through local councils in the fire-affected areas or at the Pinery Fire Recovery Centre located at the Gawler TAFE.
