SA Youth Parliament applications now open

2016-01-13

Young South Australians aged 15 to 24 years can now apply to be part of this year's YMCA SA Youth Parliament program.

Youth Minister Zoe Bettison says the program provides a great opportunity for our State's future leaders to experience and learn about parliament and the political process.

"I really encourage passionate young people from across South Australia to consider applying," Ms Bettison said.

"Youth Parliament provides invaluable training and support while developing skills and knowledge about parliamentary systems, voting procedures and public speaking.

"Participants undergo a popular six-day residential camp in Adelaide and then debate the issues that matter to them in Parliament House."

Now in its 21st year, Youth Parliament has played an important role in educating more than 1000 young people about parliamentary process. It has also given young people a platform to voice their opinions on many different issues.

"The Bills created during Youth Parliament are formally presented to me, as Youth Minister, for the Government's consideration," Ms Bettison said.

"Each year we listen carefully to what young people are telling us." Ms Bettison encouraged young people from regional South Australia to apply and take
advantage of the regional scholarships on offer.

"All participants from the regions will receive individual scholarships to assist with travelling costs for the training weekend in May and the residential week in July," she said.

"The introduction of these scholarships in 2015 saw the number of regional participants more than double.

"Last year, 24 of the 75 participants were from regional areas including Kangaroo Island, Tumby Bay, Quorn, Naracoorte, Bordertown, Whyalla, Angaston, Loxton, Nuriootpa, Mundulla and Auburn.

"Regional youth have unique and valuable perspectives, and we really want them to be part of the experience and debate."

The 2016 Youth Governor is Elysse Dimitriadis from Mundulla in the South East.

Youth Parliament is coordinated by the YMCA of South Australia, and supported by the State Government through the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion.

Youth Parliament applications will remain open until Sunday 13 March 2016. For further information please contact Alana James at the YMCA SA on 8298 7422 or visit
