State Aboriginal Womens Gathering in Coober Pedy

2016-08-30

The third State Aboriginal Women’s Gathering of 2016 is being held in Coober Pedy today, at the Umoona Tjutagku Health Service Aboriginal Corporation.

The theme for the 2016 gatherings is ‘empowered by knowledge’.

Today’s guest speakers will include Aboriginal Family Support Services, Uniting Care Wesley Country SA, health services (including crisis counselling) and services to prevent domestic and family violence.

The gatherings are an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to discuss issues important to them, share experiences and learn from each other in a safe a supportive environment.

This year the gatherings have been held in different locations across the state, making it easier for women in regional areas to participate.

Background

The Coober Pedy event is the third this year, and follows gatherings in Renmark (February) and Murray Bridge (May).

The Office for Women in the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion works closely with the State Aboriginal Women’s Gathering working group to develop a program that is relevant and useful and fosters connections between metropolitan and regional areas.

Quotes attributable to the Acting Director, Office for Women, Annie Francis

Gatherings like the one being held in Coober Pedy today are an excellent way for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to meet and talk about issues that matter to them.

I encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to attend today’s gathering and future gatherings

Gatherings in regional areas give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women across our state the  opportunity to network and share community news.
