State Aboriginal Women’s Gathering in Renmark today

2016-02-19

The first of three State Aboriginal Women's Gatherings for 2016 will take place in Renmark today, giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women the chance to discuss a range of matters.

Status of Women Minister Zoe Bettison said the gathering gives women the opportunity to, share experiences and discuss issues in a safe and supportive environment.

"Three separate gatherings are scheduled across the state this year to make it easier for women in regional areas to participate," Ms Bettison said.

"This year's theme is 'Empowered by Knowledge' and today's gathering includes guest speakers on a range of important topics."

These topics include:

  • service collaborations around key local issues, including housing and homelessness, youth, violence against women and children, and drugs/alcohol
  • the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples by Amnesty International
  • the artwork of the Kungari Arts Group.

"Previous gatherings have been very successful and attracted many participants across the state," she said.

"I encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to attend today's gathering to benefit from the stories and experiences of their peers."

Two further gatherings will be held later this year in Murray Bridge and Coober Pedy.

"It is important for gatherings to take place in regional areas so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women living outside of Adelaide have the opportunity to network and share community news."

The Office for Women, part of the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion, has worked closely with the delegate-elected State Aboriginal Women's Gathering Working Group to create linkages between metropolitan and regional areas.
