Supporting Housing SA tenants into employment in the northern suburbs

2016-11-02

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison officially launched the Stretton Fellowship today to help to identify employment opportunities for Housing SA tenants in Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

The $50,000 Fellowship has been awarded by Housing SA to a partnership between Flinders University and City of Playford for the research project.

It is hoped that the research will lead to new approaches to improving the economic and social participation of Housing SA residents and other eligible people in the northern and north western suburbs in these areas.

The research will be undertaken from the $16 million Stretton Centre at Munno Para.

The centre and the fellowship are named in honour of the late Professor Hugh Stretton, who was a South Australian Rhodes Scholar who greatly influenced town planning, housing, economic and social policy in South Australia. He was the deputy chair of the South Australian Housing Trust for 17 years.

A memorabilia collection recognising his contribution to the Playford area was also unveiled at the Stretton Centre today.

Background

The Stretton Fellowship is part of the State Government’s Knowledge Exchange Program, which aims to increase cross-sector staff and student exchanges between government, higher education, the not-for-profit sector and industry.

The Stretton Centre has a focus on collaboration and innovation in northern Adelaide, as a reminder of the work and legacy of Professor Stretton.

The State Government contributed $2.25 million to its establishment. The Stretton Centre brings together university researchers, government and industry to work collaboratively to support the social and economic development of the state, focusing on the transition of the economy in northern Adelaide after the decline of the automotive industry.

The work will link directly to the broader agenda of the State Government’s Northern Economic Plan, which has been developed in partnership with the Playford, Salisbury, and Port Adelaide Enfield Councils, along with industries, businesses, and the community.

The Northern Economic Plan is a blueprint for a prosperous northern Adelaide, focused on creating jobs and empowering local communities. For more information visit www.looknorth.com.au.

Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion, Zoe Bettison said:

The Stretton Centre is a focal point for collaboration between researchers, industry and government and aims to provide a clear demonstration of how powerful industry development can be as a driver of sustainable suburban development.

The Stretton Fellowship will provide insight into the industries and jobs of the future for this region and the needs of the local community to access these opportunities.

Participants will be supported to access activities designed to help them develop skills to find employment.

Housing SA is also exploring opportunities for government projects to support jobs, training or work experience for local people.

Flinders University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Stirling said:

Flinders University has a long history of supporting equality of opportunity for all South Australians and continues to actively contribute to the state’s economic transformation.

Through a wide range of research projects and investments that support the development of advanced manufacturing and new medical technologies, most notably at the University’s recently built Tonsley Innovation Precinct, Flinders is making a difference in areas of benefit to the broader community.

We are excited to have the opportunity to continue building on our proud history of social equity by bringing Flinders’ expertise and track record of success in economic transformation to northern Adelaide.

Mayor of Playford, Glenn Docherty said:

We’re proud to partner with Housing SA and Flinders University for a Fellowship which we are confident will lead to gainful employment and economic opportunities for our residents.
