Department for Communities and Social Inclusion

Have your say on new disability legislation.

2017-06-20

People are being encouraged to have their say on the state’s new Disability Inclusion Bill at a series of community meetings.

The new Bill aims to promote the inclusion of South Australians with disability in the community, improve access to services, support their rights and assist them to reach their potential as equal citizens.

It comes as changes to disability funding under the National Disability Insurance Scheme mean the Disability Services Act 1993 will no longer be required, as the State Government will not directly fund services.

Instead, the new Disability Inclusion Bill will reflect a whole of government approach to disability issues including public transport, education, justice and public spaces, as well as setting out the role of the State Government in line with the National Disability Strategy.

Three community meetings will be held later this month to share information about the Bill and give people an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

The Department for Communities and Social Inclusion’s Deputy Chief Executive Lois Boswell said community consultation is an important part of the process.

“We want to give every South Australian an opportunity to have their say about the state’s disability legislation as we enter a new landscape under the National Disability Insurance Scheme,” Ms Boswell said.

“This is about listening to what people tell us in terms of protecting their rights, improving their quality of life and ensuring we have an inclusive community.

“I strongly encourage people to come along to the community meetings, or visit the YourSAy website, and have their voice heard.”
