NDIS expo on Kangaroo Island a success

2017-09-12

Around 30 Kangaroo Island residents had the chance to learn more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) at a State Government expo in Kingscote last Friday, 8 September 2017.
Thirty industry representatives joined the local residents, who heard from a range of speakers about how the NDIS works and job opportunities in the sector.
Fifteen stallholders, including disability service providers and registered training organisations, provided information for people with disabilities and their families as well as job seekers in the region.
The expos are a useful opportunity for people with disability, their families, carers, friends, jobseekers and local businesses to learn more about the NDIS specifically in their region, and speak directly with representatives from the NDIA and the State Government.
The NDIS will start rolling out for people aged 18 to 64 in Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island area from 1 January 2018. This will mean up to 150 new jobs in disability in the region.
The NDIS is the biggest social reform since Medicare, giving people with disability more choice about the support they receive.
At full rollout, the State Government will contribute $723 million annually to the scheme, with an estimated 32,000 South Australians forecast to receive support packages (compared to 17,000 pre-NDIS).
Around 6,000 more jobs will be created in South Australia in a wide variety of roles to support people with disability.
For more information about the NDIS in South Australia and events across the state visit www.mysupportmychoice.sa.gov.au.
Information about the NDIS including eligibility, participant and provider information and services is available on the national NDIS website www.ndis.gov.au.
The next NDIS expo for this region will be held in Victor Harbor on Tuesday 19 September 2017.
The expos are organised by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion.
