Support for rough sleepers in extreme heat

2017-02-09

The WestCare Centre will again open overnight to provide a safe refuge and other support for people sleeping rough in the Adelaide CBD during the very hot weather.

Last night, 38 rough sleepers stayed overnight at the WestCare Centre.

The State Government activated its Code Red summer response to homelessness yesterday and it will remain in place until Saturday night. Whether or not services are open overnight is reviewed daily and dependent on overnight low temperatures.

Extreme heat poses risks for people sleeping rough due to their risk of exposure, and the impact the heat may have on any existing health conditions.

Housing SA also refers vulnerable tenants to the Red Cross Telecross REDi service, a free phone service to check on their welfare during periods of hot weather.

The Code Red response includes extended opening hours for homelessness services to ensure safe refuge from the heat is available.

Homelessness services will be providing rough sleepers with bottled water, sunscreen and information regarding overnight emergency relief/accommodation during the current extreme heat.

Support for rough sleepers is available through the SA Homelessness Gateway 1800 003 308.

Adelaide City Council is also providing the following respite options

  • The Bus Station is available for respite from the heat during usual opening hours, 6am – 9.30pm, 7 days a week.
  • Libraries and Community Centres are public spaces available for respite and use of services during usual operating hours.

State Government building foyers will also be open to members of the public seeking respite.

Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion, Zoe Bettison said:

Extremely hot weather can be dangerous for rough sleepers.

The State Government recently committed an extra $100,000 to support enhanced services for rough sleepers in the city during extreme weather.

I urge anyone who is sleeping rough to take advantage of these services, to keep out of the heat and stay cool.

Please contact the Homelessness Gateway on 1800 003 308 to arrange for shelter from the heat, and emergency accommodation where needed.
