Gold medal performances at the Duke of Edinburgh Awards

-Gold medal performances at the Duke of Edinburgh Awards

A solo trek to Mount Everest base camp, a humanitarian trip to the Philippines and a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro were among the pursuits undertaken by 23 young South Australians who received Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Government House on Friday.

Youth Minister Tony Piccolo joined Governor Kevin Scarce in congratulating the recipients who achieved the highest level of the Award.

"These inspirational deeds demonstrate the capacity of our young people to achieve and make a positive contribution to our community," Mr Piccolo said.

"The Award develops leadership, team work and communication skills which benefits the young person's study, career and personal development.

"The program has been running for more than 50 years and continues to help young people develop and enhance their abilities.

"Participants complete regular community service, physical recreation and skill activities as well as a physical journey and residential project to broaden their horizons."

The program allows young people to choose their own activities and set their own goals so they can pursue activities they are interested in.

Community service achievements from the group include volunteering with young people with disability, training with the Country Fire Service, Surf Life Saving, volunteering at a Save the Children Opportunity Shop and working with people experiencing homelessness.

Other activities included a 19-day expedition to Argentina to work with young children and bush walking in Tasmania.

Others went on overseas cultural exchanges to Japan, Germany, France, New Zealand, Tanzania, Tiwi Islands, Philippines, and Malaysia.
