More than 300 Gen Y's will help launch National Youth Week 2013 in Whyalla this afternoon, kicking off a week designed to celebrate, inspire and engage young South Australians.

NYW 2013 events include sports, dance parties, community projects, conferences, exhibitions, festivals, forums, workshops, live performances and a battle of the bands competition.

Youth Minister Tony Piccolo says he hopes this year's theme - Be Active. Be Happy. Be You. - will inspire young South Australians to embrace life and its opportunities.

"National Youth Week is a great platform for young people to sample a range of activities and experiences while exploring issues that are important to them," Mr Piccolo said.

"Everyone is welcome, as long as you are young!

"Some events are educationally or vocationally orientated; others focus on the arts, while others again are simply just for fun.

Member for Giles, Lyn Breuer, welcomed the number of regional events on this year's bill.

"I'm really glad to see so many interesting and engaging events in places like Bordertown, Whyalla and Ceduna as part of this year's festival," Ms Breuer said.

"I encourage all young South Australians, wherever they live, to visit the Office of Youth website and check-out the 150-odd events and activities being held across the state over the next seven days.

Ms Breuer praised young community leaders that helped to organise today's official SA launch at the Whyalla Leisure Centre.

"Carnival themed, replete with street entertainers and stalls, the launch will showcase the talent and diversity of young South Australians through song, dance, sport and other forms of expression. It will be a great event."
