Disability forum – a possible hub for the North

2014-10-09

The State Government today met with key groups to discuss the feasibility of a new disability
hub in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

Disabilities Minister Tony Piccolo said it was vital to get input and feedback from the community
about how a hub could deliver for people living with disability.

"Discussions took place with those who currently use disability services, potential users of a
disability hub, service providers and local council representatives," Mr Piccolo said.

"The focus was on sharing ideas and working collaboratively to address any issues or
concerns to determine the sustainability of the proposed hub.

"The forum was a valuable opportunity to hear the views of people who could be directly
involved with a disability hub."

With the challenges facing the northern suburbs in the next few years, the potential
establishment of a disability hub would allow people living with a disability, their families and
carers greater access to services.

It may also be a facility for people seeking training or a career within the disability sector.
Mr Piccolo said that with the South Australian trial of the National Disability Insurance Scheme
trial in its second year, the entire disability landscape was changing.

"A skills gap will emerge through the implementation of the NDIS," he said.

"By offering training for existing employees to further develop their abilities, or for anyone
looking to find employment in the sector, a hub could help address that gap.

"It is essential that we have a workforce that is ready to meet those demands.

"The State Government is committed to creating partnerships with potential consumers,
service providers and local governments to improve services and outcomes for people with
disability in the northern suburbs, and we look forward to delivering the best possible outcome
for all involved."

The feasibility of setting up a disability hub in Adelaide's northern suburbs was an election
commitment and the recent State Budget provided $400,000 over two years towards the study.
