New Housing SA service model to better connect tenants

Housing SA tenants will receive more targeted support with the introduction of a new service delivery model - Connecting People to Place.

Social Housing Zoe Bettison Minister says Connecting People to Place will drive significant change to the way Housing SA delivers its services.

"From 1 July, four regions will start a new way of delivering services to people needing assistance from Housing SA," Ms Bettison said.

"Housing SA's customers are changing. They are older, more receive Centrelink benefits as their source of income and more are single person households.

"Public housing is targeted to those in the community who are most at risk or vulnerable, who require more services and support to stay in their homes.

"The Government recognises the changes to the people needing its help and is investing in high quality, front line services to deliver better outcomes for staff and customers."

Connecting People to Place has three key elements – improving access, placemaking and a local response.

Improving access by making it easier for people to identify and connect with the services they need. People will have access to more information about all their housing options, including emergency accommodation, public or community housing, private rental or affordable home ownership.

Placemaking will connect people with their local community and the services they need to stay in their homes. This integrated approach to tenancy management looks at a person's whole life and will help to address issues that may mean a person struggles to stay in their home, including disruption, debt, child safety or mental health issues.

A local response will see integrated and specialised teams will be introduced to make best use of staff skills and expertise. Local staff will be skilled to help people with the housing choice that best suits their needs and refer them to the most appropriate services, as required.

Ms Bettison said new specialised roles have been introduced to further support the changes to service delivery."

Tenancy Practitioners will be focused on supporting tenants to sustain their tenancies," she said.

Access Workers will work in partnership with others to provide advocacy, information and advice to people about their housing options."

Community Response Coordinators will work with tenants and the community to support the resolution of disruption and the development of healthy communities.

"The new model for service delivery will be introduced gradually, to ensure it works well and can be adapted as required."

The first four regional areas and eight office locations to introduce the new model are:

  • Eastern Adelaide (Adelaide and Modbury)
  • Southern Adelaide (Marion and Noarlunga)
  • Southern Country (Mt Gambier and Berri)
  • Eyre and Western (Whyalla and Port Lincoln)
