New responsible gambling signage for venues across South Australia

2014-05-26

More than 700 venues across South Australia will feature increased signage to help inform problem gamblers of the risks they are taking under changes commencing from 1 July.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison announced the changes to the Independent Gambling Authority's Gambling Codes of Practice at today's launch of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.

"Under the changes, venues across South Australia offering onsite gambling will be required to ramp up their signage containing responsible gambling messages and information about gambling help services," Ms Bettison said.

"This will include hotels and clubs across the state as well as the Adelaide Casino. "The State Government's signage will be displayed more prominently, more frequently and closer to where patrons actually gamble. Our aim is to increase awareness of problem gambling and promote responsible gambling."

The signs must display information about problem gambling help services, including the national 1800 858 858 Gambling Helpline which operates 24/7.

Business Services and Consumers Minister Gail Gago said the quantity and size of materials displayed by venues will depend on the gaming activity and number of machines in that venue.

Ms Gago said venues can choose to display their own additional responsible gambling signage.

"The eye-catching signage features the helpline number, the problem gambling website www.problemgambling.sa.gov.au, and other free and confidential help services," Ms Gago said.

"A new gambling awareness campaign featuring posters and coasters will also be rolled out in venues this week.

"Most people gamble responsibly, but we know that for every person who has a gambling issue, between five and seven others are negatively impacted."

Existing multicultural signs are being refreshed and expanded to incorporate more languages.

The gaming industry has worked in partnership with the Independent Gambling Authority and the State Government to implement these changes. Responsible Gambling Awareness Week runs until this Friday.
