People in fire affected communities encouraged to register with Red Cross

2015-01-05

Red Cross has opened its Register, Find, Reunite service to assist people affected by the Mount Lofty Ranges fires to get in touch with families and friends.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said people in fire affected communities are encouraged to register either online or in person at an Emergency Relief Centre.

"Register, Find, Reunite plays an important role in connecting loved ones in an emergency," Ms Bettison said.

"The service helps family and friends to reconnect if they have been separated and have been out of phone or email contact during an emergency.

"I really encourage people from fire affected communities to utilise it."

Red Cross State Manager Emergency Services Jai O'Toole said the simplest way to let your family and friends know you're alright, or to find out that your loved ones are safe, is to register with the Register, Find, Reunite.

"Being separated from family and friends is one of the most stressful things a person can experience during an emergency," Mr O'Toole said.

"Not knowing where your loved ones are and not being able to get a hold of them by phone or email adds to that anxiety."

People can register with the Register, Find, Reunite service on the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org.au from a computer or any mobile device.

If internet and mobile devices are down due to the emergency, people can also register in person at a relief centre.
