Another successful Youth Parliament wraps up

2013-07-19

Minister for Youth Tony Piccolo today commended participants in the 2013 Youth Parliament for their work over the past five days.

The five bills passed this week have now been presented to the State Government, by Youth Governor Aaron Dela Paz during the closing ceremony of the 18th YMCA SA Youth Parliament.

"Throughout this week, we've seen more than 80 young people debate and vote on 14 different bills," Mr Piccolo said.

"They've debated subjects as wide-ranging as abortion, hate crimes, fines for racism, Indigenous education and youth violence.

"This week, I've had an opportunity to listen to some of the proceedings, and I found the level of debate, the passion and the insight shown by these young parliamentarians to be truly outstanding.

"I congratulate them for their hard work over this sitting of the Youth Parliament."

Of the 14 Bills debated in Youth Parliament, five were officially passed by both houses, including: 

  • Youth Employment Act
  • Free Student Public Transport Act
  • Organ Sponsorship and Quality Act
  • Indigenous Education Studies Act and
  • Family Planning Options Act.

"I'm always impressed that such a diverse range of young South Australians show an interest in learning more about our Parliamentary system through this fantastic program," Mr Piccolo said.

"I hope this year's participants have gained valuable experience over the past week, and enjoyed their time in Parliament."
