Breaking down the barriers associated with problem gambling

2013-11-27

A new website has been designed to break down the social stigma and isolation associated with problem gambling.

Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion Tony Piccolo said the Problem Gambling SA website had been revamped to encourage problem gamblers to share their stories in a safe, supportive environment.

"Realising you're not alone can be an essential step in helping people address their gambling problem, and by offering an environment where people feel comfortable telling their stories we're hoping to support those people who are looking to seek help," he said.

"The online environment, where people remain anonymous, makes taking this step much easier."

Mr Piccolo said the new site encourages people to share their personal stories of gambling and its effect on their friends and family.

"The site has been designed to be a safe forum where people can discuss their gambling and its repercussions on their lives and the lives of those around them," he said.

"It aims to start a dialogue about problem gambling, to help raise awareness of both problem gambling and its consequences in the broader community.

"The website helps people share their stories in a non-judgmental, non-threatening environment so that people will find support and strength in each other's experiences and consequently, feel less alone."

Mr Piccolo said other features of the website include:

  • a user-friendly and interactive map to help users find help in their area
  • a questionnaire for users to assess their gambling to find out if they have a gambling   problem
  • a tool to calculate how much they are really spending on gambling.
