Events to mark International Day of People with Disability

2013-12-02

Minister for Disabilities Tony Piccolo today encouraged South Australians to get involved in events to mark the International Day of People with Disability.

Tomorrow marks the 21st annual International Day of People with Disability – the first such celebration since the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in South Australia on July 1.

"This is an important day to recognise the contribution that people living with disability, their families and their carers make to the broader community," Mr Piccolo said.

"The introduction of the NDIS is very much in keeping with the theme of this year's event – namely Break barriers, open doors: to realise an inclusive society for all.

"The scheme is available to children aged from birth to five this financial year, and will extend to children aged from birth to 14 by 30 June 2016.

"This Scheme is just one of many reforms now underway that demonstrate a fundamental shift in the way we support people living with disability.

"Our continued commitment to the National Disability Strategy includes the introduction of annual Disability Access and Inclusion Plans, reflecting the direction of current disability reforms which move from service provision to a rights-based approach supporting individual choice, control and independence."

Mr Piccolo said a range of events were being held to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability, including:

  • The Independent Living Centre will hold an information and advisory service in Rundle Mall, near Francis Street, between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Occupational therapists will provide information and advice and demonstrate a range of equipment and products designed to support independence.
  • Celebrations will be held in Light Square, Adelaide and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
  • 'Celebration of International Day of People with Disability' will be held in Mt Gambier, Port Pirie and Ceduna.
