Funding available for programs supporting youth

2013-11-20

A total of $500,000 in State Government funding is now available to support organisations working with young South Australians.

Minister for Youth Tony Piccolo said applications were now open for funding through youthconnect, with between $10,000 and $50,000 available for projects that support the implementation of 'youthconnect: South Australia's Youth Strategy 2010-2014'.

"In the past, we've seen a fantastic array of programs funded through youthconnect – programs that help improve opportunities available for young people, and help them engage better with their communities," he said.

"This financial year, funding priority areas include young volunteers, young carers, culturally and linguistically diverse young people and young people with disability."

Projects funded through youthconnect grants in 2012-13 included:

  • Junction Australia (formerly Southern Junction), which received $50,000 to implement a project for 750 disadvantaged young people in the Onkaparinga region to conduct programs which included art, music, cooking and gardening to enhance self-awareness, self-esteem, communication skills and personal development;
  • Re-engage Youth Services Incorporated, which received $39,950 to fund 'The Challenge' - training for professionals in restoring relationships, reducing risk factors and reconnecting young people involved with the juvenile justice system to move back into the community and establish personal goals and aspirations; and
  • Overseas Chinese Association of SA Inc, which received $30,500 to deliver training sessions and information to help young people at risk of problem gambling.
