Funding now available for National Youth Week grants

2013-10-04

South Australian youth groups and community organisations are being encouraged to apply for grants for events and activities to mark National Youth Week 2014.

Minister for Youth Tony Piccolo said more than 12,000 young South Australians were involved in National Youth Week activities this year.

"National Youth Week is a great way to recognise the contribution, diversity, achievements and views of young people," he said.

"Next year's theme is 'Our Voice. Our Impact' and I'm sure there will be plenty of exciting opportunities for groups to showcase their great ideas."

Mr Piccolo said individual grants of up to $4,000 were available out of a total pool of $137,000 in State and Commonwealth Government funding to help young people to put their creative ideas for National Youth Week into action.

In addition, $7,000 is available for the State launch.

Grants are open to local councils that have a current Youth Advisory Committee, as well as State Government agencies and non-government organisations working with young people.

Organisations are encouraged to talk to young people in their community about how they would like to see National Youth Week 2014 launched in their area.

"This year saw an incredibly diverse array of events, and I look forward to seeing even more exciting ideas put forward for next year," Mr Piccolo said.

The events included:

  • a 'girls only gathering' – guest speakers empowering young women to join a trade in male-dominated environments, such as mining;
  • employable workshops – resume writing, interview skills;
  • skateboard and BMX competitions;
  • workshops – learning new skills or consulting young people;
  • Youth Success Expo and Success Strategies and Motivation Workshops; and
  • sporting activities with special guests.

Applications for National Youth Week 2014 grants and the state launch close on Tuesday, 12 November 2013.
