Honour roll nominations open to celebrate SA women
-Honour roll nominations open to celebrate SA women
Minister for the Status of Women, Gail Gago, will open nominations for a prestigious Honour Roll which celebrates the achievements of South Australian women.
The opening will take place today, on International Women's Day, which marks the remarkable contributions that women make to the community.
"International Women's Day has been recognised in Australia since 1928, and provides a great opportunity for us to acknowledge the amazing involvement and influence of women in our community and the major steps we have taken toward gender equality," Ms Gago said.
"Many significant events are held across South Australia each year to mark this important occasion, including the Adelaide march, which I will attend this evening."
The march will start outside the State Library at 5pm and continue to Rundle Street East. The Kaurna float used in the Fringe Opening Parade will lead the march with Aboriginal Elders and women on board.
"At this event, I will officially open nominations for the 2013 South Australian Women's Honour Roll," said Ms Gago.
"This prestigious Honour Roll was initiated in 2008 and is now held every second year, acknowledging the outstanding contributions that South Australian women make to our everyday lives.
"Many women who have made a significant impact at a community, national and international level too often go unrecognised, and I am delighted that the Honour Roll is a key way for us to help change this and acknowledge these women.
"I strongly encourage everyone to consider nominating inspiring women in the community for inclusion on the Women's Honour Roll.
"Those women selected for the Honour Roll will also be included in the nominations for the 2014 Australian of the Year Awards, helping to extend the recognition of South Australian women nationally."
Nominations for the 2013 South Australian Women's Honour Roll close on Friday 7 June 2013.
