Housing strategy to deliver more affordable homes for South Australians

2013-10-31

Delivering more affordable homes for South Australians is the key objective of a new five-year strategy unveiled today by the State Government.

Premier Jay Weatherill announced details of the strategy at the National Housing Conference in Adelaide, which brought together hundreds of people working in the field of affordable housing.

"Ensuring South Australians have an affordable place to call home is a key priority for this Government," Mr Weatherill said.

"Investment in housing delivers jobs, it enhances our reputation as one of the world's most liveable cities, and it makes our State a great place to live, work and invest."

Mr Weatherill said the new five-year housing strategy would build on the Government's strong investment in affordable housing.

"Over the past 11 years, we have delivered about 10,000 new affordable homes for South Australians – and we're not stopping there," he said.

"We're working to revitalise inner metropolitan Adelaide, with plans to create 18,500 new homes in the area.

"We're offering stamp duty relief for South Australians purchasing new apartments in rezoned inner-metropolitan areas – helping more people achieve that dream of home ownership, while delivering new activity in the construction industry.

"Combined with this new housing strategy, we're working to deliver even more affordable homes for South Australians – helping more people either achieve the dream of home ownership or enter the rental market."

Some of the initiatives included in the plan are:

  • A stronger focus on urban renewal to revitalise and strengthen communities;*
  • Fostering stronger partnerships with both the community and private sectors to deliver more social housing; and
  • Supporting growth in housing providers, to deliver a strong system that works with disadvantaged South Australians and people on low incomes to help them find a place to call home.

Mr Weatherill said the Housing Strategy was developed in consultation with representatives from industry, state and local government, non-government organisations, consumers, and members of the public.
